1. Definition
Stainless steel is an alloy steel with iron as the main component, containing at least 10.5% chromium, which can form a dense chromium oxide film on the surface to prevent further corrosion and oxidation.
2. Classification
According to the microstructure, stainless steel is mainly divided into the following categories:
Austenitic stainless steel: contains nickel and chromium, non-magnetic, good corrosion resistance and plasticity, common models 304 and 316.
Ferritic stainless steel: contains chromium but no nickel, magnetic, good corrosion resistance but not as good as austenite, common model 430.
Martensitic stainless steel: has a high carbon content, and can be improved by heat treatment. Hardness and strength, common models 410 and 420.
Duplex stainless steel: has the characteristics of both austenite and ferrite, high strength and good corrosion resistance, common model 2205.
3. Characteristics
Corrosion resistance: The oxide film formed by chromium makes it corrosion-resistant in a variety of environments.
Strength and hardness: Martensitic and duplex stainless steels have high strength and hardness.
Plasticity: Austenitic stainless steel has good plasticity and is easy to process.
High temperature resistance: Some stainless steels can still maintain good performance at high temperatures.
4. Applications
Architecture and structure: used for curtain walls, roofs, bridges, etc.
Food processing: used for equipment, containers and pipelines.
Medical devices: used for surgical instruments, implants, etc.
Chemical industry: used for reactors, storage tanks and pipelines.
Automobile: used for exhaust systems, decorative parts, etc.
5. Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages: corrosion resistance, high strength, beautiful, easy to clean.
Disadvantages: high cost, some types are difficult to process.
6. Heat treatment
The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of stainless steel can be improved by heat treatment (such as annealing, quenching, tempering).
Summary
Stainless steel is widely used in construction, food processing, medical and chemical industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Different types of stainless steel are suitable for different environments and needs.
